The Old Timer. Myrt the Operator. The Great Gildersleeve. Beulah. Mayor Latrivia. These individuals all have one common origin. They all were introduced on one of the nost popular (and most entertaining) radio programs that ever hit the airwaves.
With Johnson's Wax of Racine, Wisconsin, Fibber McGee and Molly were first introduced on the Blue Network in 1936, the show moved to NBC two years later. Even though it was already developing a loyal audience before the move, most loyalists feel that the show was its best not long after the network change.
Fibber was a boastful storyteller whose braggadocio was offset by his loving and tolerant wife, Molly.
The door of their home at 79 Wistful Vista must have been revolving as an assortment of characters flitted in and out of it every week. Established Chicago actors like Isabel Randolph, Harold Peary, Bill Thompson, and even announcer Harlow Wilcox peopled The McGee's fictional address with over the top, hilarious performances.
Fibber McGee and Molly was one of the most popular radio programs of the 1940s, boasting regular listeners numbering in the tens of millions. In 1943, over 37% of all radios in the country were tuned in to the show.
The program was quoted in the media constantly, and many of their regular "bits", such as opening the hall closet door, Molly's stern "Tain't so, McGee", and Fibber's loving "There goes a swell girl" are still remembered today. And who can forget Fibber's hilarious tongue twisters?
