Fort Laramie - Gold
A wagon train coming through Fort Laramie is bound for Oregon. Running off of the Oregon Trail was the Bozeman Trail -- which traveled north through the Montana Territory.
By treaty, wagon trains were prohibited on the Bozeman Trail because it cut through the Powder River Basin -- the last and best hunting grounds of the Northern Plains Indians.
When gold was discovered in Montana territory, however, some pioneers wanted their share. Indians be damned.
