When a jeweled brooch worth $50,000 is stolen, two murders are connected to the jewelry.  Marlowe follows the clues down to the waterfront. Or, to hear Marlowe tell it:

"This time it was a fishy horse-play from a redheaded beauty past a black bearded sailor to a neck-and-neck finish over a wandering seahorse worth fifty thousand bucks.  And I was the jockey.
