The Adventures of Philip Marlowe -- The Vital Statistic
When Marlowe pulls over to buy a paper, a woman jumps into his car and instructs him to take off because she is being chased.
Never one to be intimidated, Marlowe describes her as: "Streamlined with close-cropped hair the color of a smoky sunset and wearing low heeled slippers brocaded in bronze with a dress that conformed as close and smooth as lacquer on a Chinese vase."
When Marlowe reveals he is a private detective the damsel in distress asks him for his help -- and thus begins his next adventure.
